Since the conception of public education, teachers have searched for ways to manage a classroom. Many teachers are embracing technology and using it to their advantage in order to engage and keep students and families updated.
Seretha George is a third grade self-contained (All subjects) teacher at Pleasant City Elementary School in West Palm Beach, Florida. Seretha uses a plethora of technology platforms to manage her classroom, one thing she utilizes in her classroom is technology that promotes and fosters both school and class-wide culture and expectations.
Through this, student behavior is tracked by administering or taking away points that are linked to Positive Behavior Supports both class and school-wide norms and expectations.Seretha uses the EdTech platform ClassDojo to do so. Alongside this, she promotes academic excellence and parent involvement by positing reminders, publishing student work, and engaging students in Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons. Additionally, students particularly enjoy going up to the board and rewarding themselves throughout the instructional day. Seretha’s school: Pleasant City Community Elementary School is a ClassDojo school. 100 percent of classrooms campus-wide use ClassDojo and the school has seen incredible results since.
Effective classroom management is inclusive of multiple domains: culture, expectations, routines and procedures to name a few. An additional tool that Seretha utilizes in her classroom is GoGuardian. Oftentimes as teachers, we can be apprehensive about technology in the classroom for fear of student misuse. While understandable,with a tool such as GoGuardian, teachers are empowered as the digital platform allows for teachers to activate learning sessions. Teachers then are able to actively monitor student screens throughout instruction. Teachers can even go as far as to chat with students about what they observe.
Technology integration with digital EdTech platforms such as ClassDojo and GoGuardian provides a reciprocal exchange amongst all stakeholders. Students, teachers, families, and staff get to exchange learning experiences.
